Case Studies
1. Bus Driver
A bus driver strained his back and was certified unfit to drive a bus.
Physiotherapy treatment was not available for eight weeks under the NHS. He was referred for case management. The information gathered resulted in:
a) The driver being offered light duties timing bus journeys
b) The Case Manager accessing private physiotherapy for him within seven days
Outcome
. The driver returned to driving buses, having completed treatment at four weeks
. He was productive whilst incapacitated as a driver
. Without intervention, he would probably have returned to work only after NHS treatment
. A potential total absence in excess of three months was avoided
. An alternate driver employed for just four weeks
. Case management and physiotherapy costs totalled £510
2. Call Centre Operator
A Call Centre Operator sustained a fractured ankle. She was going to be in plaster for a six week period, to be followed by two weeks of recuperation before full mobility would be restored.
The Case Manager, instructed to conduct a workplace assessment and consultation with the employee's own healthcare team, reported that a return to work was possible subject to the provision of transport and appropriate and regular breaks.
Outcome
. Transport was offered and provided by a member of the workforce
. The cost, including a footstool and case management totalled £350
